Longines: The Epic of a Legendary Vintage Watch Brand

The Beginnings of a Great Adventure

Founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, by Auguste Agassiz, Longines is one of the oldest watchmakers in the world. From the outset, the brand has been distinguished by its constant concern for precision and innovation. In 1867, Longines introduced its first pocket-watch movement, the calibre 20A, which won a medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition. This was the start of a series of international successes that would forge Longines' reputation.

Innovations and Records

Longines has continued to innovate over the decades. In 1913, the brand launched its first pocket chronograph, followed in 1916 by the first wrist chronograph. The 1930s were marked by close collaboration with aviation. The Weems model, designed in partnership with naval captain Philip Van Horn Weems, enabled aviators to synchronize their watches with a radio signal, revolutionizing air navigation.

In 1954, Longines marked another milestone with the introduction of the electronic chronograph. Used at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, this chronograph demonstrated Longines' superiority in the measurement of time in sporting competitions.

Longines and Space Exploration

Longines has also played a crucial role in space exploration. In 1969, the brand collaborated with NASA to develop timing instruments for the Apollo missions. This collaboration enabled Longines to prove the robustness and reliability of its watches under extreme conditions, consolidating its reputation for excellence.

A History of Design and Elegance

Longines is also renowned for its keen sense of design. The Conquest collection, introduced in the 1950s, embodied sporting elegance, while the Flagship line, launched in 1957, became a symbol of refinement. But it was the Ultra-Chron collection, introduced in 1967, that set Longines apart with its high-frequency movements, guaranteeing exceptional precision.

The Great Figures of Longines

Over the years, Longines has been worn by iconic personalities. Amelia Earhart, the famous aviator, wore a Longines watch on her historic flights. Albert Einstein also owned a Longines watch, testifying to the brand's appeal to brilliant, pioneering minds.

Longines and Vintage Watches

Longines vintage watches are particularly prized by collectors for their exceptional quality and timeless design. Models from the 40s and 50s, equipped with reliable and precise movements, are sought after today for their history and beauty. Each vintage Longines watch is a testament to the watchmaking craftsmanship and innovation of the era.

Longines Today

Today, Longines continues to embody timeless elegance and horological precision. The brand remains at the forefront of innovation with iconic collections such as the Longines Master Collection, the Conquest Classic and the Longines HydroConquest. Each Longines watch is a testament to the brand's commitment to excellence and innovation.

With over 190 years of history, Longines remains a pillar of Swiss watchmaking, symbolizing both tradition and modernity. Longines watches, whether modern or vintage, are not only instruments for measuring time, but also precious collector's items, embodying the brand's pioneering spirit.
